Brief Strategic Therapy with Couples

This training film illustrates therapy techniques to be used with married couples in distress. Marital relations can be defined in terms of rules. These rules are comprehensive in a couple's interactions and range from small issues to major crises. For example, a husband might behave irresponsibly. The wife then behaves responsibly. The more irresponsibly the husband behaves, the more responsible the wife becomes, and vice versa. A marriage in trouble can be viewed as made up of rules that cause the couple distress and rarely change with insight. The therapy presented here focuses on the problem sequences and uses directives to change them, particularly with the use of paradox. VD-1326X (50 minutes).
