The viewer for the first time can experience Jay Haley's live training behind a one-way mirror of actual cases as they progress from week to week with a training group. You will see the case presented by the therapist, Haley planning the interviews with the therapist, his directives in the live supervision, and the debriefing group discussions. The clients are not shown for confidentiality reasons.
The therapy being taught is brief and problem focused. The problems are varied as are the ethnic groups. Suggestions from the supervisor to the therapist are sent on a computer monitor where the therapist can see the messages but the client cannot. The goal is to change therapists as well as clients, since they must learn how to change people in distress. The films offer valuable material for discussion of different therapy ideas.
